Tips to get started on Ava

What's Ava?

Ava is a technology developped by Transcense, Inc. to provide real time captioning and communication services to empower deaf and hard-of-hearing people to understand and participate better in conversations with hearing people.

How does it work?

  • Ava is a mobile app that you can download on iOS and Android with your invite link.

  • It uses voice-to-text technology to transcribe and identify voices in a conversation to show who says what.

  • In a group, everyone needs to have Ava on their phone. If you connect to each other via Ava, you can see what every person is saying.

  • Ava is 24/7 available. You just need to be connected on the Internet. Better & more reliable Internet reduces delays to under a second.

These points should have gotten you started, but here's a nice step-by-step video you can watch to see how we use Ava.

Running into issues?

Need an invite to continue in the app? Tap on the invite link you received, from your phone to get started with Ava.

Check your connectivity. Better & more reliable Internet reduces delays to under a second.

Speak close to the microphone. Leaving your phone in front of you usually works fine when in quiet places. In noisy environments, you may want to hold your phone to make sure Ava can hear your voice properly.

Connect everyone on Ava. For now, Ava needs every speaker to have their own device with Ava on it. It can be a good idea to prep in advance of meetings to help the person who needs accessibility to make sure everyone is aware.

Ava doesn't use more data than a music app. Ava uses about 10MB every hour of use. You can even lower this if you use it on your WiFi at work or at home.

If you're low in battery, dim or lock your screen and you'll be fine. Ava can uses up to 15% battery per hour but only if you keep your phone screen on with maximum brightness! If you're worried, dim the screen, but keep the microphone close because you won't see if all the words you said are accurate.

Ava doesn't get it right all the time. Ava learns from your voice, and is getting better every day at it. But it can be far from perfect, especially with specific conditions you'd expect a similar technology to face: background noise, accents, not everyone has their own device. You can help Ava getting better by tapping on the wrong words and edit them. If you're still worried about the quality of the transcription, we totally get it. You may want to think of other accessibility options more suited to the situation.

What about privacy? At Ava, we will never allow a third party to access your conversation information. We use your conversation data solely to improve our speech technologies. Our mission is to make sure that deaf & hard-of-hearing people can have an equal access to information, anytime, anywhere.
