Why Ava?

Working with highly-skilled captioners like you is not always an option in situations where deaf/hard-of-hearing people find themselves into. Time or budget constraints may prevent them from getting the accessibility they deserve. We’re talking about restaurants, last-minute stand-up meetings or dates. And it’s exactly for these moments that Ava has been designed.

Ava is a mobile app that everyone (coworkers, family members, friends) downloads on their smartphone. By connecting each smartphone’s microphone via the app, Ava captions what the group says on the deaf/hard-of-hearing person phone. They can then answer by either talking, or if they have a “Deaf” voice, typing. Ava can even voice the deaf person’s answer.

What Ava means for captioners

Ava’s machine-intelligence-based system does not provide the same level of 98.5% accuracy that you provide as a skilled captioner. That’s why Ava does not aim to replace captioning services, but only to make conversations accessible in situations where there’s no accessibility in place.

Ava aims to relay the work of captioners. For example, when you close your stenotype after captioning an important meeting but the deaf/hard-of-hearing person still has a day full of conversations, we want to keep providing them the accessibility they deserve for these more casual conversations.

An active student life also happens outside of the classroom, far from any accessibility service provided. Deaf/hard-of-hearign students should not be forced to miss out on dorm conversations, group study sessions, cafeteria discussions, workshops and whatnots.

Though they’re often interpreted/captioned, classrooms can be very challenging for deaf/hard-of-hearing students when it’s not the case.
