How to sign "Coffee Break" in Sign Language

We're always ready for a coffee break! Whether you're just trying to chat about the latest news or take your eyeballs off the computer screen, coffee breaks are a necessity of working life. Use this sign to invite your Deaf or hard-of-hearing coworker to take a coffee break with you!

Signing "Coffee"

  1. Hand Position: Start with both hands in a "S" shape, which is made by making a fist with your thumb in front of your fingers.
  2. Starting Placement: Position your hands in front of your body, at about chest level. Your dominant hand should be on top of your non-dominant hand.
  3. Movement: Move your dominant handin a circular motion, as if you're stirring a cup of coffee.
  4. Facial Expression: Maintain a neutral facial expression.

Signing "Break"

  1. Hand Position: Start with both hands in closed "5" shape, which is made by making an open hand shape, with the fingers pressed together
  2. Starting Placement: Position both hands in front of your body, at about chest level, with your non-dominant hand facing your body
  3. Movement: Bring your dominant hand to the middle of your non-dominant hand, separating your fingers between your middle and ring finger
  4. Facial Expression: Maintain a neutral facial expression.
