How to Sign "Cat" in Sign Language

Graceful and independent, cats have a unique place in many folks’ hearts. If you come across a cat person, this sign will be extra easy to remember!

Signing "Cat"

  1. Hand Shape: To sign "cat" in ASL, use your dominant hand in a "L" handshape, with your thumb and index finger extended.
  2. Sign Location: Position your hand near your cheek, with your fingers pointing forward your lips
  3. Movement: Move your “L" handshape in a small, graceful arc, as if you're outlining a cat's whiskers.
  4. Facial Expression: Wear a serene and contemplative facial expression, mirroring the calm demeanor of a cat.

Note

This sign can also refer to someone being "catty," as in "that person was acting so catty!"
