How to Sign “Lion” in Sign Language

The lion, known as the king of the jungle, symbolizes strength, courage, and majesty. Learning to sign 'lion' in American Sign Language (ASL) not only enhances your vocabulary but also celebrates the power and grace of these magnificent creatures. This is also the sign for the horoscope sign “leo.”

Signing “Lion”

  1. Hand shape: Extend your dominant hand into an open, bent '5' shape, resembling the profile of a lion's mane.
  2. Hand location: Hold your hand near your forehead, as if indicating the presence of a lion's mane.
  3. Movement: Move your hand backward, along the top of your head, as if tracing a lion’s mane.
  4. Facial expression: For the most part, you can keep a neutral facial expression. If you are talking about the ferociousness or restfulness of the lion, make sure your face and movement match that!
