How to Sign “Basement” in Sign Language

This sign represents the idea of going down to a lower level. This is also the base sign for “basic.”

Signing “Basement”

  1. Hand shape: Form your dominant hand into an open “A” handshape, with your hand extended. Form your non-dominant hand into a closed “5” handshape.
  2. Hand location: Bring both hands in front of your body, below chest level. Place your non-dominant “5” palm facing down. Bring your dominant “A” underneath your non-dominant hand.
  3. Movement: Move your dominant hand in a circular motion under your non-dominant hand.
  4. Facial expression: Keep a neutral facial expression.
