How to Sign “Classmate” in Sign Language

This sign is a compound of “class” and “mate.”

Signing “Class”

  1. Hand shape: Form both hands into a “C” handshape.
  2. Hand location: Raise both hands to about chest level. Start with your palms facing each other, your thumbs almost touching.
  3. Movement: Move both hands in an outward circular motion, the back of your fingers meeting in front of your body.
  4. Facial expression: Keep a neutral facial expression.

Signing “Mate”

  1. Hand shape: Form both hands into a bent “5” handshape.
  2. Hand location: Raise both hands to about chest level.
  3. Movement: Tap to intertwine your knuckles with your palms facing your body. Tap twice.
  4. Facial expression: Keep a neutral facial expression.
