How to Sign "Talk" in Sign Language

Here, we see the different variations for how you would sign chat, talk, tell, and say. Each one has an appropriate context, so use what makes sense for what you are trying to convey!

Signing variations of “talk”

  1. How to sign “chat:”  With both hands in an “open 5” handshape right under the chest with both palms facing outward and wrists facing each other. Shake both hands a couple of times, representing having a conversation.
  2. How to sign “talk:” With your dominant hand, form a “4” handshape and tap against your chin.
  3. How to sign “tell:” With your dominant hand, form a “1” handshape and bring it under your chin. In one fluid motion, move your index finger from under your chin outward.
  4. How to sign “say:” With your dominant hand, form a “1” handshape and bring it against your chin, index finger touching your chin. Twist your index finger towards your non-dominant side once.

Fun fact

In the Deaf world, these signs might more commonly refer to instances when hearing people are saying something with their voice. When Deaf people refer to someone signing something in ASL, they often use the word COMMENT.
