How to fingerspell your name

  1. Use your dominant hand. Hold it near your shoulder, palm facing the person you are talking to.
  2. Keep your hand in one place. Let each letter flow into the next instead of bouncing your hand for every letter.
  3. Slide double letters. For names like Anna or Matt, move the letter slightly to the side rather than signing it twice in place.
  4. Go for rhythm, not speed. Clear and steady beats fast. Signers read the shape of the whole word, not one letter at a time.

Introduce yourself in ASL

To say "Hi, my name is", sign "Hi", then "My name is", and fingerspell your name.

What is a name sign?

Many Deaf people also have a name sign, a short sign that stands for their name. Name signs are given by members of the Deaf community, so you do not make one up for yourself. Until you have one, fingerspelling your name is exactly right.
